This summer, I had the opportunity to work in a newsroom and learn what it takes to be a broadcast journalist. My internship was at WROC-TV News 8 in Rochester, New York. My experience at News 8 was very rewarding, as I was able to learn so much about broadcast journalism and make connections with local journalists.
Throughout the summer, I have learned so much about what it takes to build a newscast on the daily. From sitting in pitch meetings, to shadowing reporters, to even helping producers build their shows, I now have a much better understanding of how a real newsroom runs.
Going into this internship, my main career interest is in the journalism field. I love to write; tell stories and I am really interested in the different medias that are available to get news out. I have always had an interest in broadcast journalism; however, I have never been sure what it is about broadcast that I like most. Throughout my internship I was able to dabble in both news production and reporting, and I have decided I enjoy the reporting side of broadcast the most.
During my internship, I was responsible for helping with anything in the newsroom. I would break up packages for producers and enter them into iNews, I would write scripts and choose VO for the newscast, I would answer phones and send emails to the newsroom if there was an interesting story idea, when shadowing reporters, I would assist with the camera and help ask questions during their interviews.
The newsroom at News 8 was very welcoming. Everybody was more than happy to show me what their jobs are, and they were appreciative when I offered to help them with anything. Depending on the day, some of the days in the newsroom were a bit slower than others. For example, if there was big breaking news, I would help more than if it was a slower day.
My favorite parts of the internships were the days that I had the most work to do. On busy days, I was able to get a lot done for producers and it made me feel happy to see my scripts go into the newscast when anchors read them on air. Another favorite part was shadowing reporters. Each reporter was able to offer me a different piece of advice during my time with them – I also was able to learn new interview tricks through their different techniques.
I would defiantly recommend this internship to another student. My favorite part about the internship is how supportive my supervisor was in letting me choose the path that I wanted to learn most about. I was able to spend time with both producers and reporters, and in doing that I learned the responsibilities in both jobs. If there are any students interested in a internship in video editing, production, directing or even studio prep — this is a great internship for that as well. Overall, this internship has been incredibly rewarding and a great addition to my resume.
