Program\nTimeline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Tuesday,\nApril 9, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c<\/strong>Follow\nyour gut: my path from Fisher to MD-PhD in gastrointestinal physiology<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n After\ngraduating Honeoye Falls Lima (HF-L) High School in 2009, I matriculated at St.\nJohn Fisher College with the intent of applying to pharmacy school. I was\nregistered as a chemistry major and was enrolled in pharmacy prerequisite\ncourses. However, my interests began to shift during my freshman year, which\nled me to pursue an additional major in mathematics. I also decided to apply to\nmedical school instead of pharmacy school. Research experiences in both\nchemistry and mathematics made me realize that I want to incorporate scientific\ndiscovery into my future career. I joined the MD-PhD program at the University\nof Illinois at Chicago in 2013 where I recently completed my PhD in\ngastrointestinal physiology. My research focuses on the role of the\nneurotransmitter\/hormone serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) in the\nintestine. I made the novel discovery that 5-HT is able to activate a receptor\ncalled the aryl hydrocarbon receptor which is important in detoxifying\nchemicals and modulating immune responses. While shifting scientific fields was\ndaunting at first, I quickly realized that my training in chemistry and mathematics\nat Fisher gave me a unique perspective to solve problems within the field of\nphysiology while also preparing me for the challenges of medical school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Friday,\nApril 12, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n WSOP<\/strong> is the Wegman\u2019s School of Pharmacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Between 5:00 and 7:15 p.m. hors d\u2019oeuvres will\nbe available in the WSOP Atrium 1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The poster session features the junior Science\nScholars (Class of 2020) presenting posters about their proposed research\nprojects. These projects will be conducted during the Fall 2019 semester and\nthe results will be presented at the 2020 Science Scholars Symposium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Junior\nScience Scholars <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
