The St. John Fisher College Center for Sustainability hosted the Fisher Goes Green Fair on March 23 to share the sustainability efforts of local organizations such as Reconnect Rochester and Fisher Dining Services.

“I’m hoping that, at least, it encourages people to think more about sustainability and their impact on the environment,” said junior and sustainability club member McKenna Erwell. “We’re just really trying to get more people involved because I feel like a lot of people don’t know a lot about sustainability.”

The Fisher Goes Green Fair is an opportunity for students to learn about the sustainability efforts of their school and the city they live in.

Wade Griffin is part of the Fisher dining services and is the Chef De Cuisine. Griffin is in charge of making the Grab & Go food at Cyber Café.

“We’re going to figure out something,” said Griffin. “I personally think that our best course forward would be make everything that we can compostable because recycling isn’t really working right now.”

Four years ago, Fisher made the switch to Ozzi containers. This gave students the choice to take their food out of the dining hall in reusable containers. However, according to Griffin, there was one concern expressed with these containers: the color. The food may not seem as appealing when in a green container.

Griffin offered a solution: “I think, in the long run, if we could get composting facilities at Cyber and use a different container that’s compostable, I think that would be a more reasonable way to maintain the appearance and what not that we have at Cyber while still not creating a lot of stuff for the landfill.”

Reconnect Rochester has the goal to go to various cities, towns and neighborhoods in New York and inform the residents about different ways to effectively change their driving habits to combat climate change.

The advocacy and outreach manager for Reconnect Rochester James Dietz said the idea is to get people thinking about the health of the environment as well as their own health. “We push for a lot of people to ditch their cars as much as they can,” Dietz continued.

The best way to help this cause is by getting involved and practicing going green, said Dietz.
